The forums are horrible. I made them work well enough, and then pretty much forgot about them.

On the other hand, I hardly ever really use forums, so I don't know what people do with them.

Enlighten me! Tell me what you want the forums to be like, and I will file a mass of forum-related bugs so I know what I should be doing.

Few things coming to mind:
- list on the front page is useless (and takes a lot of cpu) and should be something a little cooler like recently-made threads
- need a REAL page listing new threads you haven't read
- better set of forums
- nicer formatting of individual posts
- lock down bbcode and make a reference somewhere
- all of SA's smileys wooo

yes all of those things would work and you should put what you have in the forum index on the front page like developments, games, you know, seperate list for each. yes that would take a lot of cpu

Well here's some things that I'd think would improve the forums. (that haven't already been mentioned in Eevee's post)
- Ban system
- Flood control (people can't post again until after a set time limit (usualy 30 seconds)
- PM system (not all of us can get on an IM service or private IRC chat)
- User Karma (users can mark people down for spam and such and exalt for posting really intelegent posts every *insert reasonable time period*)(ment to show how much the forum hates/loves you and see if someone needs the Dumb stamp)
- Sig's being put into a scrolling box if they get too big.
- Spoiler tag(s)
- *left blank for later editing*

-Thread owners can stop some users from posting in their threads
-Thread owners can lock topic

oooooo thats nice ideas. also i forgot one thing. This shouln't be too hard, in terms of coding, but could you put a user's listing on the forums? Like famous, entertaining, needs to get laid, etc. @shinymew: you have nice ideas too and I will take out my sig pic cause its too big. I promise to not have any sig pic that is more than 200*200 pixels

No about the thread owners controlling their own thread. Just no.

We do need bans yes, and possibly flood control.

Eevee we should talk about PMs some!

I always hated "karma"

Spoiler tag would be easy to add.

Don't you mean an automatic overflow, ShinyMew?

I recommend probably:

- AJAX (I don't think you'd approve this one, but hey..)
- Warning System (That should be default with bans, but just in case.)
- Polls

No, Automatic Overflow keeps people from posting extremely large post.

Flood control keeps people from posting a ton of posts at one time (usually used to keep people spamming separate topics with the same post).

No, I am referring to signatures, my suggestion has nothing to do with posting.

Ah, What I was refering to was posting which is what caused the confusion.

definitly make a control on the topics because a single easy to answer question shouldn't be made as a thread (maybe just a seperate thread for those sort of things or a reference to the shoutbox.
karma would be annoying because the bad karma people could always give someone they don't like unneccessary bad karma
and now.....KIRBY <(^.^)>
indeed.....

- 5 Posts in threads each day (maximum)
- 5 posts in shoutbox each day (maximum)
- Styling the post bar

I know these forums aren't ridiculously active and excessive spamming/posting in the forums/shoutbox is bad, but why on earth would you intentionally limit someone to five posts a day? If someone has something worthwhile to say they should be able to say it, regardless of how many times they've posted before. Now, if the system could be programmed so that moderators/Eevee/whoever can place that restriction on users that are actually causing a problem, I can see that working.
This is not a signature.

And fix up the look of the forums a bit too. Sometimes I can't see the usernames, and it is particularly messy. :/

What's wrong with the usernames?

Probably more IE7 fuckupings. If everything is all screwed up looking, it's because IE7 has a retarded box model. We can't fix that, yell at Microsoft.
